News reporters were not allowed to observe any committee meetings or events during the first day of the Idaho Republican State Convention yesterday at Coeur d’Alene Resort. Republican delegates from counties across Idaho will spend three days voting on proposed rules, resolutions and platform changes and, finally, electing the party’s chairperson. Party officials said that reporters would not be allowed to attend any convention meetings, but would be allowed to interview delegates before and after meetings.
An Idaho Supreme Court justice yesterday floated a question about the proposed University of Phoenix acquisition: Did the State Board of Education pay $1.5 million for consulting before greenlighting the deal? State Board officials were quick to say they never paid for due diligence work. Attorney General Raúl Labrador has argued that the board broke state law when it held three closed-door meetings to discuss the $685 million plan.
The cause of one of the fires in the Canyon earlier this week probably was a visibility marker ball attached to a power line. A video showing the ball catching fire and falling was posted
to social media. Idaho Power is investigating.
Idaho Energy Freedom announced its support for the Bureau of Land Management Final Environmental Impact Statement analysis. The BLM roughly cut the proposal in half earlier this month.
An airplane crash 5 miles north of Elk River in Clearwater County has claimed the life of the pilot. Two passengers, sons of the pilot survived. The plane exploded in flames and the father was unable to escape.
President Joe Biden has ordered federal disaster assistance to three Idaho counties affected by a severe storm in April. A severe storm caused flooding, landslides and mudslides that resulted in substantial damage to Idaho, Lewis and Shoshone counties. An initial assessment estimated that the damage across the three counties surpassed $6.6 million.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has updated the number of short-term rentals they have in operation and how many kids are using them since Governor Little signed the Promoting Families and Protecting Children Act. IDHW says they currently have one short-term rental still in use and there are currently five kids living there.
