A motion was filed on behalf of Idaho's longest death row inmate to the Idaho Supreme Court to stay his execution. The Motion to Stay Execution of Thomas Creech was filed Wednesday. According to court documents, a date is set for oral arguments on Monday, Feb. 5. Both sides will be given five minutes to present their arguments against or in support of the appeal. He is set to be executed on Feb. 28.
A bill to expand contraception access in Idaho is making its way to the Senate floor after a public hearing in the Senate Commerce and Human Resources Committee yesterday afternoon. Senate Bill 1234 would require that insurance companies provide up to a six month supply of prescribed contraceptives to enrollees.
Just after 1 p.m. yesterday, Bingham County Sheriff's Office responded to a crash involving one of their deputies with another vehicle south of Goshen. The driver of A pickup that collided with the deputy’s SUV died at the scene. The female deputy suffered serious injuries.
The Idaho Legislature’s House Judiciary, Rules and Administration Committee voted to hold a potentially unconstitutional bill that would have allowed the state to seek the death penalty for convictions of lewd conduct with a child under 12. Under current Idaho law, only first-degree murder is punishable by the death penalty.
Tax season is here. On Monday, the Idaho State Tax Commission and the Internal Revenue Service began processing state and federal tax returns. E-filing is the fastest way to get a refund. According to the Tax Commission, it takes eight weeks to get a refund when filing electronically versus 10 to 11 weeks when filing by paper. Idaho processed over one million individual income tax returns in 2023 and expects to process over 1.03 million in 2024.
Governor Brad Little will join up with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and 13 other governors Sunday. The group will be in Texas to see firsthand Texas efforts to secure the boarder. Two Idaho State police teams are headed to the state to assist.
